If you broadcast over the air, over cable or for a distributor, loudness is not a matter of taste: there is a standard.
In Europe it is EBU R128, built on the ITU-R BS.1770 measurement, targeting −23 LUFS with true peak no higher than −1 dBTP. In the Americas the equivalent is ATSC A/85, targeting −24 LKFS.
In plain terms: the viewer should not have to touch the remote when the commercials come on. It is the number one complaint at local stations and the first thing a distributor will throw back at you.
What AURA does
It measures perceived loudness in real time and shows the meter per channel, with integrated loudness and true peak.
One detail that took some work: the meter does not go blind on silence. Some meters, faced with a quiet passage, drag the measurement and then lie as soon as the audio comes back.
And it corrects, not just measures
This is the important part: AURA normalises loudness in real time. It holds the whole programme at the target with a gain that moves slowly, and a peak limiter that stops it going over the ceiling.
The correction is deliberately slow: it does not pump or squash the dynamics. And it acts on the final audio, so SDI, IP, streaming and NDI all come out matched.
It is what a hardware loudness processor does, inside the playout and with no added delay.
